A House Is More Than 4 Walls & A Roof

Today, like most days, our office took time to reflect, brain-storm & collate ideas on how we could collectively create new R.E business in this tough & some times down right dreary housing market!  As these days grow longer and we get immersed in this new 2011 market,  I wondered how we got here? Here meaning, when a house became just a commodity & not a treasure.

Growing up in San Leandro, forth generation “Rinetti”, it was very apparent that our family worked very hard for what they had and found it very hard to part with it.  For example; my parents bought their parents home which was built by and lived in by their parents.  The home was passed down/bought by the son or daughter after a parent had died or moved after decades in the home and with the next generation moving in. There was never the mention of a “starter home” or “3-5 year plan”. It was a place to buy, love, raise your family, create a neighborhood to respect and a life to enjoy. Yes, eventually my parents sold that family home. A home they out grew with 4 children and additional needs. A decision my father and his father had a very hard time coping with. In the end the home was sold outside of the family and to this day, the family that bought our family home still live in that beautiful house! I was 6 when we moved and I am 42 now- You do the math.

I realize that life throws us curve balls, dreams merge with reality and what we once thought we could attain seems some times impossible. Yet I still believe that we have choices and I think as a society our choices have been some times clouded. The housing market has been no exception. It seems that we have gotten way off track to put it politely.  One day things will pick up, the employment market will get better, the economy will begin to become brighter and our homes will be worth more then what they are worth  today.  History proves that regardless what we read in the paper, hear on the news and is forecasted by professional analysts.  Our homes need to become our treasures, our lifes investment and not just a financial investment based on a booming housing market.
